Binge-Worthy Fantasy Series to Escape Reality

Sometimes, nothing compares to the escape a good fantasy series offers. The best fantasy worlds make you forget reality, at least for a little while, as you get completely caught up in epic quests, intricate magic systems, and characters so real that you feel like you’re right there beside them. If you’re on the hunt for a series you can sink your teeth into, look no further. Here are some binge-worthy fantasy series that will have you turning pages deep into the night (and maybe ordering the next book on your Kindle at 3 a.m.).

The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

If you’re looking for a series that’s rich in world-building, intricate plotlines, and unforgettable characters, The Stormlight Archive is an absolute must-read. This series, set on the storm-ravaged world of Roshar, is classic high fantasy but with some seriously unique twists. From its captivating shard weapons to the mysterious spren, there’s an endless amount of detail to get lost in.

One of the things I love about Sanderson’s writing is how he manages to weave together multiple perspectives and storylines without losing that emotional core that makes you care about the characters. Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar—they all feel like real people facing impossible odds, and I found myself rooting for them at every twist and turn. Plus, if you love magic systems that make you think, Sanderson’s “hard magic” system is brilliantly logical and fascinating. Trust me, once you’re in, it’s hard to leave.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

This one might seem obvious, but A Song of Ice and Fire is a binge-worthy series for a reason. Martin’s Westeros is a brutal, unpredictable world where alliances shift, characters evolve (or die), and no one is safe. The way he builds suspense, intertwines character motivations, and tackles themes of power, betrayal, and morality is gripping in every sense.

What makes A Song of Ice and Fire so binge-able is that it’s filled with mysteries and foreshadowing that keep you guessing. Every time I thought I had a character or storyline figured out, Martin would throw in a twist that had me questioning everything. If you’ve only seen Game of Thrones, the books offer even more depth, detail, and political intrigue.

The Broken Empire Trilogy by Mark Lawrence

If you’re up for something darker, The Broken Empire Trilogy might be your next obsession. The story follows Jorg Ancrath, a young prince with a seriously brutal past who’s bent on reclaiming his throne by any means necessary. This is not your typical hero’s journey—Jorg is deeply flawed, ruthless, and at times even terrifying, but Lawrence’s writing is so compelling that you can’t help but be fascinated by his story.

The world Lawrence has created is gritty and raw, but also strangely beautiful in its own way. It’s a post-apocalyptic medieval landscape, where remnants of our world are woven into a dark fantasy setting. The trilogy is dark fantasy at its best, with a gripping story that challenges what it means to be a hero—or a villain. Fair warning: it’s not for the faint of heart, but if you enjoy morally complex characters and intense storytelling, The Broken Empire is unputdownable.

The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

Few fantasy series have captured my attention as completely as The Kingkiller Chronicle. Patrick Rothfuss tells the story of Kvothe, a gifted young man who rises from humble beginnings to become a legend in his own right. The books follow him through his trials, triumphs, and the many secrets he unravels along the way.

Rothfuss’s writing style is lyrical and immersive, which makes the world of Temerant feel both grand and intimate. You get magic, music, mystery, and just the right touch of romance. And while only two books are currently out (The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear), they’re both thick enough to keep you busy for days. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait for the third book! Even so, it’s a series I’d recommend diving into—you’ll get so wrapped up in Kvothe’s story that the wait will feel worth it.

The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie

Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law Trilogy is fantasy with a dark, gritty edge and some of the most morally complex characters you’ll encounter. The story takes place in a brutal world, where everyone has a hidden agenda, and happy endings are rare. What sets this series apart is Abercrombie’s unflinching look at the human condition—his characters are flawed, unpredictable, and sometimes downright unlikeable. Yet they’re so well-written that you can’t help but be drawn into their lives.

If you’re tired of stereotypical heroes and villains, The First Law Trilogy is a breath of fresh (albeit dark) air. The plot is full of twists, the action scenes are intense, and the dialogue is as sharp as a sword. Abercrombie is a master at subverting fantasy tropes, making this a series that will keep you on your toes.

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

Yes, Sanderson makes the list twice, and for good reason. Mistborn is another binge-worthy series with a magic system that’s unique, logical, and just plain cool. The story is set in a world ruled by a dark lord known as the Lord Ruler, where ash falls from the sky and mist covers the land at night. The protagonist, Vin, is a street urchin who discovers she has the ability to burn metals, giving her enhanced abilities.

Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan (and Brandon Sanderson)

If you’re looking for an epic fantasy series that you can completely immerse yourself in for months (or years), Wheel of Time is the way to go. Robert Jordan’s sprawling series spans 14 books, with an intricate world, massive cast of characters, and a history that feels as rich as any in real life. The story follows Rand al’Thor, a young man who discovers he’s destined to face an ancient evil known as the Dark One.

What makes Wheel of Time so binge-worthy is its sheer depth. Jordan’s world-building is meticulous, and by the time you’re a few books in, the characters and their struggles start to feel personal. It’s a huge commitment, but for fans of epic fantasy, it’s an unforgettable journey. And if you’re feeling hesitant about starting such a long series, Sanderson’s masterful handling of the final books (after Jordan’s passing) proves that the series ends on a high note.

Whether you’re in the mood for dark and gritty worlds or epic journeys across fantastical landscapes, each of these series offers a unique escape. These books transport you to places where magic and danger lurk at every turn, where heroes are flawed, and where stories unfold in ways that are impossible to predict. Grab one of these series, find a cozy spot, and get ready to be swept away—just don’t blame me if you emerge bleary-eyed after a week of non-stop reading!
